Dialogues III – Oskar Kokoschka and Winfried Muthesius
15 April to 3 September 2023
Vernissage on 14 April 2023 at 5 pm
In the current exhibition, Winfried Muthesius references Oskar Kokoschka’s 1916 lithograph “Rest on the Flight to Egypt”, which is in the collection of the Christian Art Foundation Wittenberg. The exhibition presents the artist’s very personal perspective on the theme of “flight and expulsion”.
Works from the “broken gold” series will be on display. Golden paintings, gold leaf on wood, with the gold painted over or destroyed, intended as a journey into the unknown.
Muthesius is also presenting new photographic works which take on the theme of “flight and expulsion”. This series of photographs shows flip-flops and shoes washed up on remote beaches in the Cape Verde Islands. The disconcertingly poetic photographs mainly show details of the damaged or destroyed shoes. The photo series is entitled “1,000” and comprises a total of 1,000 works. The number 1,000 resonates with various connotations. “What I find really interesting is the astonishing contemporary quality of the Biblical themes. The lost shoes or flip-flops that I found on the beaches in the Cape Verde Islands are the most basic footwear worn by poor people. Losing a shoe usually means having to walk the rest of the way barefoot. For me, the flip-flops washed up on the beach are a symbol for flight and expulsion. Where Oskar Kokoschka’s work still radiates calm and serenity, and also a certain assurance, my photographic works focus on loss and uncertainty.” (Winfried Muthesius)
When we observe these works, we realise that they are not simply objects to be viewed. They look back at us, making for an open-ended experience.
