How Muthesius entered into dialogue with Kokoschka and understood flight
Christhard Georg Neubert Chairman of the Board of the Christian Art Foundation Wittenberg in conversation with Winfried Muthesius.
As co-founder of the Society for Contemporary Art and the Church and founding director of the St. Matthew Cultural Foundation in Berlin’s Kulturforum, Christhard Neubert knows how to ask the right questions. He naturally addresses the topic of “flight and expulsion,” the connection between Kokoschka and Muthesius, but also more primal issues such as the question of artistic existence, the difference between self-perception and the perception of others, what could and could not influence the artist, but also the question of truth in Muthesius’s paintings.
The audience could learn more about “subtle colorfulness”, which is expressed, for example, in Muthesius’ black tones, or about the reduction of the many strokes in the first sketch drawing to a few lines, i.e. the attempt to bring complex relationships condensed onto the page.
Those who could not be present will soon have the opportunity to see the conversation as a video. In September 2023, a book will also be published in which excerpts from it can be read.
